The recording of two simultaneous comparison spectra on each side of a stellar spectrum facilitated the most accurate measurements. 1 lists a selection of 16 of the best known prism spectrographs in use on reflectors in the first half of the twentieth century. For the first two decades these used mainly Jena O102 dense flint glass prisms. However, John Plaskett made a thorough comparative study of seven Jena glasses in 1914 and advocated at first O722, a light flint glass which, although less dispersive, gave four times the spectral intensity at the K line and five times at Balmer Hζ [214, 215].
Young’s paper was one of the early papers to demonstrate the applicability of the Doppler effect to light rays, by showing that the measured shift of spectral lines from the solar limbs was in concordance with the known solar rotation rate from sunspots. By far the greatest exponent of gratings for solar spectroscopy in the nineteenth century was Henry Rowland at Johns Hopkins University. He recognized the benefits of the concave reflection grating for solar spectrum photography, especially in the ultraviolet, and he devised the elegant Rowland mount, which gave a normal (uniform dispersion) spectrum that was always in focus on the photographic plate for any wavelength setting .
3 Astronomical grating spectrographs and their development from 1900 In the first half of the twentieth century there were a number of milestones in the development of grating spectrographs. In the first decade of the century, gratings were used on relatively large telescopes for bright sources such as the Sun and Mars. Thus Walter Adams (1876–1956) used a 5-inch Rowland plane grating on the Mt Wilson Snow solar telescope (aperture 24 inches) to record a blue spectrum of Arcturus in 23 hours over five nights!
