And this is still true if we stretch the notion of 'observability' so as to cover observability by means of physical instruments. In fact, when we consider the implications of supernormal cognition, something more like the old Dualistic conception of human personality begins to be plausible again. In this theory mind and body are regarded as two distinct and mutually irreducible entities, and there is two-sided interaction between them. Only, as against some traditional form of Dualism, and especially the classical Cartesian version of it, we have to insist on the reality and the crucial importance of unconscious mental processes.

I turn now to the other main obstacle which confronts us. It is equally serious, and even more obvious - indeed it is perfectly familiar to us all. Dare I suggest that it may become even too familiar? that one is in some danger (I speak of myself) of getting used to it and acquiescing in it, as in something permanent and inevitable? The obstacle I refer to is this. We need, and have not got, a comprehensive hypothesis which will bind together all our phenomena, or as many of them as possible, in one unified intellectual scheme.

So long as this conception prevails and determines our whole outlook on human experience, the claims of religious people are simply not taken seriously. How can they be, when their acceptance would commit us to a theory of human nature which nearly everyone assumes to be unscientific and out of date?
