In the two weeks before classes are scheduled to start, I have three full days of meetings to attend. The first of these is the college’s New Faculty Orientation, which takes place on Thursday, August 17, a week and a half before classes are scheduled to start. It lasts a full day, with a continental breakfast and lunch on the college.

The energy level in the room is higher than usual, and although the participation does not skyrocket to unparalleled heights, they are clearly interested. I can read in their comments and their glances at one another that they are surprised to learn that a professor has even heard of Dave Matthews, much less that he owns one of his CDs.
